Lake Union - Seattle's
Other Waterfront
Seattle is a major shipping port and numerous cruise ships depart
from Seattle's cruise ship terminal each year, however, most
private small boats and yachts are moored in Lake Union and Lake
Washington which are natural freshwater lakes connected to Puget
sound by a series of locks. The advantages
of their being freshwater are numerous. Boat bottoms
don't fowl with barnacles, metal parts don't corroded from the
salt, and those enjoying water sports such as water skiing or
swimming can do so in clean, fresh lake water.
Lake Union is virtually in downtown Seattle and there are a
number of hotels either right on Lake Union or very nearby.
No trip to Seattle is complete without a tour of Lake Union, Lake
Washington, and the locks.
Float planes depart regularly from Lake Union at Kenmore Air's
waterfront terminal. Those staying in Marriot's
Courtyard hotel have perhaps one of the best views of the float
planes taking off and landing on Lake Union.
